THE REAL-LIFE JUSTICE CENTER FEATURES A CONFEDERATE STATUE AND FLAG:
The “Confederate Memorial” art mimics reality.
The Silent Sentinel and Confederate flag occupy the most prominent position on the lawn of the center of justice in Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi.
The Agitators: A Reminiscence is fiction but is set in Carrollton, and the narrator’s story begins and ends as he sits on the courthouse steps in view of those historical relics.
Here is how a photograph taken in 2025 compares to the art used for the “Confederate Memorial” image:
THERE ARE OBVIOUS AND HIDDEN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE “CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL” AND “FOR ALL MISSISSIPPIANS” COVERS:
You may notice the State of Mississippi flag instead of the Confederate flag. The Silent Sentinel is cleaned to look new, and the base holding it up is reimagined. A plaque on one side of the statue memorializes 22 victims of an event that occurred on the grounds of the courthouse. Their spirits gather on the lawn to acknowledge the effort of the artist sculpting a new base representing all Mississippians working together to build their state. Witnessing the interaction are Shadrach and Matthew on their bikes and Penny on her pony, Pinto. A disapproving figure observes from an upper window. Of course, an older Shadrach is imagining all of this from the steps of the courthouse.
