What’s an Agitator?

I should give you my definition of the word agitator, since my story centers around agitators.

Agitator is a disapproving word that describes a radical who stirs up others against the status quo. Famous men and women who were described as agitators in the past include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers, and Jesus Christ. Yes, that Jesus Christ. Have you ever thought about the really hot place we’d be if the Romans hadn’t felt threatened by His agitation activities?

Even here in Carrollton, there were everyday people who got branded as agitators. Like my own mother Martha Greenwood, my friend Matthew Nelms, his parents Sam and Meg, and my cousin Penny Caslin. Some even called Penny’s pony, Pinto, an agitator. Fifty years ago, she pooped on the base of that Silent Sentinel right there on the courthouse lawn.
